*NEWS: Fury Won’t Dwell On Being Bombed Out By The Jets ! …

By M.McGrath - November 11, 2009
The word coming out of the NQ Fury camp is that the playing squad whilst genuinely disappointed with the performance in Newcastle last Sunday (0-2 loss) will not be dwelling on what team boss Ian Ferguson & several senior players have since labeled a ‘bad day at the office’. Fury’s hardworking squad will take leave from training & playing duties this weekend as the A-League enters a one round (two working week) mid season hiatus due to a FIFA international weekend.

Gloveman Paul Henderson who ironically & arguably had his best performance in a Fury shirt to date stood tall as his team mates struggled at just about every level to compete with Branko Culina’s Newcastle team said that in a perfect world Fury would get straight back into action to rid the demons of the fledgling clubs worst performances in nearly three months.

However with the FIFA enforced international break arriving this week Fury will not play again until November 21st when they meet the Central Coast Mariners at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Henderson who would much prefer to get straight back on the horse so to speak in a playing sense took some solace from the fact that the mid season break would give players & coaching staff every opportunity to work on any errors identified during the weekend loss.

Fury who as a fiercely united outfit win together & loose together spoke as a group regarding the recent hiccup & were still somewhat lamenting the fact they enter the break in last place on the A-league ladder when any kind of win would have catapulted the first year team into the finals places ahead of this pseudo half season break, Paul Henderson elaborated further…

''We've had a talk about it this morning and it's just one of those things, it was a bad day at the office,'' he said. We've had a good last 10 weeks, we've been pretty decent but it's pretty disappointing we're going into the break at the foot of the table.

"They were winning a lot of the second balls and things like that, but it's just one of those games that we didn't turn up for and we got punished for it.

''We've got time to get our heads right. We could have been sitting fifth or sixth on the table but it's not to be and we're disappointed obviously.

''You want to play as soon as you can but we've got a break and we've got to deal with it.''

Henderson a key element behind the teams make shift back four refused to lambaste the defenders in front of him instead laying praise upon the players who had until Sunday been performing with aplomb…

''Credit to the boys that have come in, we've had injuries and make a makeshift defence.

''Everyone's good at the back and vying for competition is always good."

The former Leicester City keeper who kept Fury in the match for long periods of Sundays fixture before eventually conceding but keeping the score line respectable with a string of fine saves & blocks revealed that he was pleased with his own performance but much preferred life when the sides midfield & defence was water tight that in turn reduces his involvement in games to a minimum…

''It's good to make saves, every goalkeeper wants to do that. On the flip-side you don't want to have to make saves because everyone is playing well then, but it was good to make the saves.''

Hendo as the Fury custodian is affectionately known by teammates & fans saw the upcoming weekend off as the perfect opportunity for the clubs players to take a break from football & clear their minds ahead of the second half or home straight of the clubs inaugural season that continues the weekend after next…

''It will be good to clear our heads, see our families and things like and then come back next week, firing and ready to go.

''Our last result at home was a win.

''We're going to have some supporters behind us so it's going to be very important that we pick up some more points, especially at home.''

*NEWS: Ferguson - Fury Will Recover From Setback…

By M.McGrath - November 10, 2009
Despite a lack luster performance in Newcastle on Sunday that could have seen Fury enter the mid season break in a finals bound top six position team boss Ian Ferguson genuinely believes the character within his first year A-league squad will enable the now bottom of the league again Townsville based outfit to recover from this weekend’s round # 14 setback and continue its improvement & recent move up the A-league table that all came undone against the Jets…

''Yeah, look it was pretty lackluster, the boys have put in a great shift over the last eight, nine weeks, it's pretty disappointing considering fifth place was at stake.

''We looked flat, we looked like we just ran out of steam.

''Again the most disappointing thing for me was giving the possession away, not competing with runners, not competing with players, they looked hungrier than us and deserved their win.

''I think the scoreline (0-2) flatters us, I think (Fury Goalkeeper) Paul Henderson had a fantastic game. But without being too hard on the boys, a lot of them have given us a big, big effort this season and have been fantastic, just one or two games have let us down so far.

''As I said against the Gold Coast, we got our backsides kicked there and thoroughly deserved that, yesterday was probably another bad day at the office. But what I see in these boys is they've got character.

''We're going to have bad days, we're going to have good days, I've said it before, it's like a roller coaster ride.

''Yesterday was one of those downs and we need to pick ourselves back up, we've recovered before, it's back to the office and get on with it on the training park again.''

Ferguson also welcomed the current two working week break & is confident the return of A-league football on the 21st of November at Dairy Farmers Stadium will double as a return of a host of senior players while Ferguson is also confident of the further signing of some fresh bodies into the Fury squad as injury replacements…

''Hopefully it's going to be a good one for us because it gives us time to get two or three players back.

''We're hopeful we'll have Ufuk Talay back, we're hopeful with Robbie Middleby and even Karl Dodd, and then maybe get one or two injury replacements in, we're working on that as we speak and hopefully we'll have something this week.''

*NEWS: Robbo To Learn Full Injury Fate Later This Week…

By M.McGrath - November 10, 2009
James Robinson affectionately labeled ‘The Pest’ by team boss Ian Ferguson upon his arrival at the fledgling Townsville based A-league outfit will this week undergo medical imaging scans & have the knee injury he picked up after half an hour against Newcastle on the weekend fully assessed. The early prognosis regarding Robinson’s injury is not good with the player suspected to have damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee an injury that is a real modern day tragedy as the likeable Scouser has been one of Fury’s shining lights this term.

In what had been a breakthrough season for Robinson who had previously been one of the league’s most maligned players after stints with Melbourne Victory & Perth Glory Robbo had gone a long way to reversing many critics opinions of the players ability & is now hoping on a miracle if his season is to continue in any form.

Fury team boss Ian Ferguson lamented the loss of the influential & well performed midfield player…

''It doesn't look too promising, we believe it's going to be another (ACL - Anterior Cruciate Ligament) which is very disappointing, he was coming into his own in the midfield and I felt he was doing a fantastic job for us, that's another one gone.

''He's one of these players who knows the game well, he's got good knowledge of the game and he's also good on the park where he's got those leadership qualities.''

Midfield general Ufuk Talay’s return from injury seemingly cannot come quick enough for Fury’s now even further stretched squad.

*442: Putting Out The Busch Fire ! ...

By M.McGrath Via 442.au (First Published November 8th 2009)
The summer bush fire season may well be approaching but there is one Busch fire in a NQ Fury context that has been smoldering for months! Enter Beau Busch, anyone remember him?

This particular Busch fire has been a slow burner and big Beau has watched on helplessly as first his season imploded and now his A-league career is fast looking like ending in a plume of hazy smoke. In a career sense it may even be too late to attempt CPR as the footballing vital signs being recorded from the former Sydney FC defender are faint and barely showing a pulse.

He may well be a man mountain, fiery eyed and wild haired with a large frame that’s hard to miss but Beau Busch has become the invisible man since making the move to Townsville for what was supposed to be a career defining brand new start. In all honesty Beau’s transfer to NQ has been an absolute disaster.

The onetime Sydney first teamer whose week currently consists of making up the numbers at Fury training with weekends off (on full pay of course) is so far on the outer with team boss Ian Ferguson that specialist midfield players with little or no defensive experience are being preferred to the big fella despite the club having been without FIVE full time defenders due to an extended injury crisis over the past few and early months of the current A-league season.

The former Sydney man most famous for playing in a mummified state after a sickening head clash with Mariner Pedj Bojic was unceremoniously dumped during the 2008/9 season along with fellow future Fury teammate Robbie Middleby by then Sydney coach John Kosmina who was loosely quoted as saying at the time something along the lines of ‘with all due respect to Beau and Robbie… it simply is not working’.

Fast forward twelve months and it still isn’t working out for Beau while Robbie Middleby to his credit has regained form and enhanced his reputation with some spirited performances for Fury along with being handed the clubs vice captaincy. Only injury has kept Middleby out of the Fury team recently.

Admittedly Beau’s chances have been extremely limited but therein lay the problem, as in why?
After rehabilitating from some standard tidy up off season surgery as players in this modern age do, Beau made a few appearances in pre-season and when Fury looked defensively shaky in the opening home loss to his former club along with picking up some injuries Busch was handed a start for that now infamous round # 2 visit to Robina. (The now redeemed 5-0 thrashing).

The away side capitulated and Busch admittedly was all at sea but in no way was he the lone ranger! However this would be the one and only time to date that A-league enthusiasts would see this particular player in a Fury strip and who knows maybe it will also be the last! (It may end up becoming a true collector’s item and the only time Beau is ever sighted on field in a Fury Kit!) Even more worrying for Beau is the fact that despite the clubs aforementioned defensive crisis he has not even been able to make any of Ian Fergusons extended or preliminary squads.

Now we don’t see Beau train five days a week and Ian Ferguson does, could it be a question of attitude? Was he that bad in the flogging dished out at Robina? Is he so bad at training that the coach has felt it necessary to draft in emergencies? The future doesn’t bode well for Beau at all.

To rub even further salt into the wound and after witnessing defender after defender being stretchered off to the abyss Beau would have then watched on in horror as Chris Grossman got the nod ahead of him in the back four alongside another specialist midfield player Rostyn Griffiths. Rostyn at least had all the hallmarks and had been touted as a possible future centre half, but you would have reckoned Beau would have fancied his chances at trumping the novice Grossman for a defensive place in the team?

Youngster Jack Hingert who sunk rather than swam early when getting destroyed by Mr. Danning and co has rebuilt his confidence and restored some faith with his coach and is the next cab of the rank but Beau simply has not and does not look like figuring at all. Even Kojiro Kaimoto the Bonnyrigg Eagles Japanese defender who only spent six weeks with the club made triple the appearances Busch has.

So where does that leave Beau? Who on a one year deal can’t break into a side that has two midfielders regularly appearing in the back four (If you add utility man Paul Kohler that’s three emergency defenders and one junior used ahead of Beau) at a club that continues to search the football world for one or even maybe two further defensive replacements?

Can anyone honestly see any other A-League clubs giving him a contract? Does Beau go back to his state league roots and hope to pick up trials with top flight sides over the next pre-season? At least a state league return would perhaps see him get some game time under his belt as 90 minutes in 14 weeks can’t be doing him any good. That one ill-fated appearance in green and white is fast looking like becoming a future novelty Fury trivia question.

The one and only thing that does seem certain is that Beau Busch certainly does not appear to have any future with North Queensland Fury. So what next for Beau? Should he return to the NSW state league? Newcastle is absolutely out of the question, well as long as Con still draws breath one would imagine (re: bitter payment dispute that ended up in the courts), is Beau really that bad? Was the oft maligned John Kosmina correct after all? Would you take him at your club? Can he revive his career at Fury? Should he dust off the pencils and go back to journalism? Does anybody anywhere rate Beau?

*NEWS: Team Boss Disappointed With Awful Fury Showing…

By M.McGrath - November 9, 2009
Fury team boss Ian Ferguson couldn’t hide his disappointment (neither should he have) at the performance his troops put in at Energy Australia Stadium Newcastle yesterday afternoon. After working so hard to firstly become competitive, move up the league table & win the applause of neutrals & rivals alike Fury put in such a poor performance that all those early ghosts seemingly put to bed returned to haunt the Fury gaffer.

A victory would have fired Fury in to semi finals bound top six, a draw would have kept Newcastle bottom of the league but a loss has seen Fury plummet back to the leagues cellar position. Hence the universal disappointment regarding this very flat, lethargic, unorganised & very non-Fury like display, even the fight & spirit that has become the usually plucky side’s trademark was missing.

Had goal keeper Paul Henderson (who has had consistency problems of his own this season) not put in his best performance to date for Fury then the score line could have been embarrassing. Ferguson pulled no punches in the aftermath of this uncharacteristic Fury showing & admitted they will have to work hard to find their way over the upcoming International break...

''We're hoping to get Middleby, Ufuk and Dodd back and some injury replacements so we've got 10 days to get over the line. We'll also need to work on what we need to do to get back playing the way we were for the past few months.

''To be honest Hendo and James Robinson are the only two players to get pass marks from me, the other boys couldn't keep the ball or get runs which was just disappointing. It was very disappointing, it was an opportunity to go into the top six but we never took it. That's the most disappointing thing, the manner in which we played.

''You can get away with one or two players playing like that but when it's six you're not going to win games.''

A visibly disappointed skipper & Fury’s marquee player Robbie Fowler who barely got a kick (even dropping into midfield late in the game in search of the ball) echoed team boss Ian Ferguson’s sentiment…

"We went in to the game with our confidence sky high, but from the first whistle to the last we did not perform. Probably only the keeper could come out of today's performance with credit.

"If it weren't for him it could have been a few more."

After two weeks on the road Fury’s next two matches are at its Dairy Farmers Stadium home base the first coming in just under two weeks time on Saturday the 21st of November against the Central Coast Mariners followed by the clubs third meeting of the season against Adelaide United on Saturday the 28th of November.

*NEWS: Robbo Struck Down With Cursed Knee Injury…

By M.McGrath - November 9, 2009
James Robinson one of Fury’s most consistent players during the fledgling Townsville based clubs debut A-league season has been struck down with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament after an innocuous challenge in the first half of Fury’s frustrating 2-0 loss to Newcastle Jets at Energy Australia stadium early yesterday evening.

Robbo as he is affectionately known by teammates & fans had gone along way this term towards shutting up many of the often maligned players fiercest critics with performances of guile, energy & importantly quality before being stretchered of after 30 odd minutes of the match played in Newcastle in an incident that mirrored Shane Stefanutto’s season ending injury in Perth. There was very little contact & the injury as likely suffered due to falling awkwardly.

The player’s actual fate is still to be determined by medical imaging scans & the specialists nod so to speak but the initial prognosis doesn’t bode well for James who in all likelihood will be ruled out for the remainder of the 2009/10 season. Robinson would then join Shane Stefanutto & Scott Wilson who have seen their respective seasons ruined by a similar injury. Karl Dodd who suffered a not so serious Knee injury in the early rounds that did require surgery is only now starting to find his feet after a lengthy spell out with injury. Dodd should get the green light to continue his on field commitments with the club after the upcoming mid season FIFA enforced International break.

Ufuk Talay should also be back in contention for Fury’s next match a home clash with the Central Coast Mariners. Talay’s rerun will be more than welcomed after losing Robinson who had been an influential figure in Fury’s midfield.

A crest fallen Fury head coach Ian Ferguson was unable to add further light on Robbo’s injury but wasn’t overly confident…

"It doesn't look good. It looks like an ACL injury, another one. It's not looking great, I can't really comment on it because we've not got the scans back yet but it doesn't look good.

"We've got a few weeks off now to get some players in and get some players back, Ufuk Talay and Karl Dodd should be right for the next game.

''We're hoping to get Middleby, Ufuk and Dodd back and some injury replacements so we've got 10 days to get over the line.

"We'll also need to work on what we need to do to get back playing the way we were for the past few months."

Match Report
The equation was black & white ahead of Sundays away clash in Newcastle any sort of Victory & Fury go into the international pseudo half season break in an impressive sixth place & occupying a finals place but anything less than a point would see Fury’s rise from the foot of the table last but a week.

Fast forward to full time round # 14 & Fury has fallen to a poor 2-0 defeat putting in a performance worthy of A-league also-rans rather than a finals aspirant. Fury was poor from go to woe with only goalkeeper Paul Henderson standing up to be counted. Hendo who has had his own moments of mediocrity this term stood tall keeping his team in the contest for large parts of the match until Newcastle finally got their just deserts mid way through the second half.

Cutting a long story short Fury was 1st, 2nd & 3rd best to everything all afternoon. The back four after gaining so much recent praise absolutely fell apart, the midfield created little & despite their usual endeavor the front two got little by way of service.

Chris Grossman the emergency right back looked every part a fill in as youngster Sean Rooney continually tore Grossman & the right hand side of the field to bits. John Tambouras committed as ever huffed & puffed but reintroduced the suicide moments that he had seems to have eradicated from his game. Even Rostyn Griffiths was guilty of air swings & poor positioning after regularly keeping the Jets on side when the defensive line stood up & simply standing waving his arm in the air appealing for an offside decision that was never there because of his own poor reading of the game.

The midfield never got going, Brockie was ineffective, Williams tried but got little & Osama Malik went into his shell a bit after receiving a likely broken nose early from a blatant Labinot Hilati elbow. When James Robinson was stretchered of mid way through the first half with what looks another (ACL) serious knee injury one did wonder if it was going to be Fury’s day.

Nevertheless Fury on account of some fine shot stopping & last ditch blocks from keeper Henderson went into the half time break with the scores level, leaving the diehards enthused & expecting a second half comeback that we have so regularly seen from Fury this term. It wasn’t to be & Newcastle eventually found the back of the net to take the lead.

Ian Ferguson rang the changes & made a few tactical switches through the match to little avail. His players simply didn’t have the performance in them. Maybe they had got so up for recent games this was the lull that had to happen? Regardless it was a very disappointing performance & not that of a finals aspirant.

Perhaps expectations have risen to high regarding the fledgling outfit’s ambitions & quality? But this awful show displayed all the bad things that had neutral & rival fans poking fun at Fury early in its footballing life. They could have gone into the break hailing their arrival on the scene but instead limp home to lick its wounds on the bottom of the league. Admittedly Fury are only win outside of the finals places still but will have to markedly improve if they are to figure at the business end of the season.
This one bad performance has raised all the old questions amongst the doubters & skeptics going some way towards undoing all the fine work of the past few months. Let’s hope it was just a blimp.

*NEWS: Fury Quietly Confident Of Securing Third Straight Victory…

By M.McGrath - November 8, 2009
Without airing any over confidence Fury team boss Ian Ferguson & skipper Robbie Fowler genuinely believe that three wins on the bounce is a realistic ambition as the Townsville based outfit aim to keep its recent table climb in motion when tackling the Newcastle Jets away from home this afternoon. Fury beaten only once in its past 10 outings takes some impressive away form into the first ever league meeting between the two clubs today & head coach Ian Ferguson was as coy as ever ahead of kick off…

“I don’t look at favourites. You can go out and play the best football you’re capable of and get a win one week and then play poorly the next week and not get the result.

“We beat the top team in the A-league last week and we’ve been very good in the past few games.”

Meanwhile marquee star & club skipper Robbie Fowler echoed Ferguson's sentiment & revealed the secret to Fury’s recent success as being confidence…

“I don’t think we’ve been playing massively different now to what we were earlier in the season but confidence in football is a massive thing and if you go into games and you’re confident, you add a bit more intensity.

“Obviously, there were games where we played well but didn’t get the three points but the last two weeks we’ve done well.

“I’d like to think we could get three games on the trot there were plenty of people who didn’t think we could get two games on the spin and we did it so I think we have a good shot at a third straight.”

However Fowler knows that a wounded animal lies ahead after the Jets poor performance mid week…

''If I was managing Newcastle then I'd want my team to bounce back straight away.”

*NEWS: Jets Can Be A Force, No Sentiment For Returning Kohler…

By M.McGrath - November 8, 2009
Newcastle Jets head coach Branko Culina believes his team can be an A-league force & that they are not far away from turning some decent performances into results whilst Fury utility Paul Kohler is looking forward to visiting his old club but will not let any sentiment cloud his way with the former Jet determined to help his new club collect the full prize on offer this afternoon - another valuable three points for Fury.

Branko Culina who was an 11th hour coaching appointment at Newcastle after the sudden departure of head coach Gary Van Egmond to the Australian Institute Of Sport on the cusp of the new season. However the transition was quite smooth as Culina was already employed at the Jets in a technical director’s capacity.

The Jets drew last round away to Brisbane & were comprehensively beaten by three goals to nil during Wednesday evenings round # 10 catch up match away to Wellington Phoenix.

Culina knows that anything less than three points against NQ Fury this afternoon will leave his jets grounded on the leagues bottom at the pseudo half way mark of the season & ahead of the upcoming International break. Culina however remains defiant adamant his team is close to charging up the league…

"The team is probably two wins short of being a very good team, if that makes sense, because we are a team that relies very much on confidence and if the results are not there then the confidence is not quite there," Culina said.

"I think you would certainly see a different team if we won the next two home games.

"We've put the Wellington performance behind us. It's best described as an ordinary game, probably the worst game that we've played this year overall. Having said that, we still had some opportunities at critical moments in the first-half where, had we taken them, things could have been totally different.

Culina closed by stating that he genuinely believes his team should have enough ammunition to thwart Fury’s recent run of good results…

"Because we play the games at home, I think it's a genuine expectation that we can do it.

"In all due respect to the opposition, it's the type of opposition that we can and should beat. I think this is the first time that we've been in this situation that we're in now and hopefully we can take advantage."

Meanwhile former Jet & current Fury utility player Paul Kohler returns to his former home to play against the club he made over 50 appearances for & won a championship medal with along the way…
“To be fair there isn’t much of the old team left, the coach is gone and three quarters of the players from the previous team aren’t there anymore.

“This is a new part of my life North Queensland.

“ It’s a really big match coming up on the weekend, if we can get three points it will be a big factor in the crowd that we get in two weeks in Townsville.

“Going out and believing in our own ability is going to be key, the last couple of weeks we have had a really good foundation and stuck to what we are good at and it has paid off.”
